Composites 7-9

Based on advanced composites book.

QuestionAnswer
What is the purpose of applying mechanical pressure to composite parts during curing? Removes excess resin, Removes air, Maintains contour, Holds securely, Compacts fibers.
___________ ____________ is the most widely used and recognized method of applying pressure for use on advanced composites. Vacuum bagging.
What precaution should be taken when using shot bags to apply pressure? Use plastic sheets between bag and repair to prevent bags from sticking.
Why are clecos not recommended for applying pressure? Because you have to drill holes into the part.
What is the purpose of peel ply? Keeps patches in place, transfers excess resin and air without sticking to part.
How is excess resin drawn into the bleeder? By use of perforated release film.
_____________ are absorbent cotton that soaks up extra resin. Bleeders
_____________ allow air to flow over a parts surface. Breathers.
Where should the thermocouple be placed when bagging a part? Next to repair area over the parting film.
What is the purpose of pleating the bagging material? Provides excess bagging to allow the bag to properly fit over a contoured part.
What are the dangers of using compressed air when cleaning composite parts? May cause delamination.
The amount of pressure applied (vacuum) to a composite part varies with? Effectiveness of the seal, Amount of vacuum, altitude at which the repair is being accomplished.
Name some methods of applying pressure to a part? Vacuum bagging, Shot bags, Spring clamps.
What methods of applying pressure are not recommended? C clamps, Clecos.
________ _____ is peeled of the part, which causes a slightly _________ surface, important if the part is to be _________________. Peel ply, Rough, Re-painted.
A hydrophilic bagging film is? Water sensitive and will become more flexible when exposed to a higher moisture content.
When excess bagging will not conform to the part resulting in ridges, this is called? Bridging.
Before painting a composite that was cured with release film what must be accomplished? Remove the glaze.
Name some precautions/ requirements when selecting scissors for cutting raw composite fabrics? Use special steel or ceramic serrated edged scissors, Do not use conventional scissors, Use individual scissors for each material type.
What is the recommended cutting fluid when machining composite parts? Water only.
Why are using chemical based cutting fluids prohibited when machining composites? Can soak into ply's and cause delamination.
What is the recommended method when drilling composites? Use drill speed of 20,000 rpm feed the drill slowly and back up with a piece of wood.
What is the recommended drill bit angle for composites? 135 degrees.
What is a dis advantage when drilling aramid? Can fuzz which can wick liquids.
What is the recommended bit type when drilling carbon? Dagger or spade bit.
Why should you not use aluminum oxide sand paper for sanding carbon? Dust from the paper will get embedded into the fibers and cause an electrolic action.
When sanding multiple layers of a composite what is an indication that you have sanded through a layer? Shinny film between plys and a change in fiber orientation.
What is the recommended band saw blade to be used when cutting composites? Fine tooth carbide or diamond edge bit with 12-14 teeth per inch.
Simplest test for checking for delamination is? Tap test.
Curing using heat provides stronger repair but excessive heat can cause damage? True.
