What is bonded honeycomb (sandwich) construction? A laminar structure consisting of alternating dissimilar materials to make a structure stronger than the materials individual properties.
What type of materials are used in honeycomb construction? Stainless steel, magnesium, titanium, paper, e-glass, plywood, nylon.
Where are sandwich construction assemblies used? Bulkheads, control surfaces, fuselage panels, wing panels, radomes, empennage skins, shear webs.
What procedures should be used when drilling a hole through plexiglass? Back the plexiglass with wood and feed the drill slowly use a drill bit that has a tip angle of 60 degrees.
What is crazing and how does it occur? Hairline cracks on the surface of plastic. It's caused by heat damage caused by excessive stress due to one side of the material being heated more than the other, exposing material to solvents.
When inspecting plexiglass what should you look for? Crazing, discoloration.
What causes honeycomb structures to delaminate? Moisture.
What are the acceptable repair methods for bonded honeycomb structures that has been damaged? Potted repair method, laminated glass fabric cloth overlay for damage that exceeds the potted method.
What is used for hole filling a bonded honeycomb structure? Potting compound.
What special precautions should be observed when repairing radomes? Repair must retain its strength and electrical transparency.
What is a warp line? A highlighted strand that indicates ply direction.
What does pot life mean? The workable time of a resin after catalyst has been added.
What is a Barcol hardness tester? A punch tester for composites the depth of the hole indicates if the resin has cured.
What is done to honeycomb before repairing? Remove the damage and replace with potting compound or replace with honeycomb plug
