CPU The central processing unit (CPU) is the main component of a computer.
Client-Server Networks A type of network in which a server directs the clients' requests for resources.
Communication Information transferred between user agents and servers on a network.
Cookie A small text file stored on a computer by a Web site containing information about previous visits to the Web site.
Dial-Up A type of network connection in which data is passed through phone lines.
Digital Certificate An online credential issued by a trusted authority and used to verify user identity.
EULA End-User License Agreement (EULA) is a document associated with a standalone software program which explains the legal regulations for using the software.
Embedded System An operating system that combines processors and software in a device.
Excel The spreadsheet application used in the Microsoft Office suite.
Extranet A private network that an organization uses to communicate and share data with customers or partners.
FTP File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a protocol used to move files and folders over a network or the Internet.
Filtering Software A program used to prevent a user from going to certain Web sites that may be inappropriate.
Firewall Hardware or software used to protect data by determining what can get in and out of a network
Flaming Hostile and insulting interaction between Internet users.
Footer The bottom portion of a document which may contain information such as title author page number or file name.
Format The act of modifying the appearance of text and other.
Format Painter A tool used in Microsoft Office applications which applies the formatting of a selected area to other areas.

HTML Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is the language used to format text and other elements of a Web page.
HTTP Hypertext Transport Protocol (HTTP) is a protocol that transmits requests and data between user agents and Web servers.
HTTPS Secure Hypertext Transport Protocol (HTTPS) is the encryption protocol used to transmit requests and data between agents and Web servers.
Hard Drive The primary storage component of a computer which holds all software and data.
Header The uppermost portion of a document which may contain information such as title author page number or file name.
IP Address A numerical address that identifies computers and devices on a network.
ISP Internet Service Provider (ISP) is a company that provides customers access to the Internet.
Input The first stage of the computing process, in which a user initiates an action by giving the computer information or a request.
Internet The worldwide network of connected computers and servers.
Intranet A private network that allows computers within an organization to share data and applications.
LAN A local area network (LAN) is a connection of two or more computers in close proximity.
Margin The white space surrounding the text or objects on a document.
Monitoring Software A program used to record what Web sites a user visits.
Netiquette Online guidelines that define what type of conduct is appropriate and courteous to other Internet users.
OS An operating system (OS) is the primary form of software running on a computer that organizes files and folders as well as telling the hardware how to interact with the user and other software.
Open Source Software An application that allows free distribution and encourages developers to improve the application and add to it.
Optical Media A type of media used to store data which is read by a laser such as a CD or a DVD.
Output The third stage of the computing process in which the computer produces a result based on the user's request.
Peer-to-Peer Network A type of network that connects two client computers directly together.
Podcast A series of digital audio or video files accessed via a Web feed.
PowerPoint The presentation and slide show application used in the Microsoft Office suite.
Processing The second stage of the computing process, in which the computer analyzes information input by the user.
Protocol Communication standards that allow different systems to communicate on a network.
Proxy Server A form of network security that acts as a go-between for requests on a network.
RAM Random Access Memory (RAM) is a memory chip in a computer which holds all programs and data when they are in use.
ROM-BIOS Read-Only Memory Basic Input/Output System (ROM-BIOS) is a computer chip which holds basic instructions and services in order to run basic hardware tests.
RSS Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a protocol that allows subscriptions to podcasts newsfeeds blogs and other content on the Web.
Real-Time Operating System An operating system that reacts to current events and actions occurring around it.
SSL Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is the protocol used to encrypt data being transferred across the Internet.
Select The act of highlighting a segment of text for further editing.
Server Hardware that enables communication by passing messages to other users on a network.
Shareware A version of a software application available for free use with limited features or for a trial period.
Software as a Service An application that is not installed locally but used over the Internet or another network.
Spam Unsolicited bulk e-mail.
Standalone Software A type of software that is downloaded or installed and runs independently on a computer.
TCP/IP Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is the standard protocol suite used to ensure that all computers connected to the Internet speak a common language.
Table A grid with modifiable rows and columns used to cleanly present data or other information.
Template A set of pre-designed formats and layouts applied to a document for a specific purpose.
Theme A pre-defined set of backgrounds colors and text formats used in Microsoft Office applications.
URL Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is the address of a Web page on the World Wide Web.
User Agent Locally accessed software that allows the receipt of and response to communication.
Virus A small program or application designed to harm a computer A virus requires human interaction to spread.
WAN A wide area network (WAN) is a connection of two or more networks over a great distance.
Web Cache A file that stores copies of Web pages to make frequently accessed pages load faster.
Word The word processing program used in the Microsoft Office suite Word allows users to enter text images and other objects to create various types of documents.
Worm A small program or application, capable of self-propagation designed to harm a computer.
