| Wireless Local Area Network(WLAN) | 802.11 Popularized by the Wi-Fi alliance. Problems with attenuation and interference. Can't send and receive using the same frequency band, making it half duplex |
| Stations(STA) | Wireless client devices and AP(type of STA) |
| Network Interface Card(NIC) | For stations: built-in. USB and other interfaces |
| Ad hoc mode(IBSS) | Peer-to-peer without using the Access Point. STA uses the other STA's MAC address to connect |
| Access point(AP) | Provides wireless LAN devices with a point of access into a wired network. Wireless comm. base station. 100-150 metre range |
| Basic Service Set(BSS) | Consists of wireless clients and single AP. Identified by SSID. Clients communicate only through the AP. AP is usually connected to the wired network |
| Extended Service Set(ESS) | 2+ BSS wireless networks installed in the same area, using multiple APs. The APs are connected via wired network called Distribution System(DS). Shares a common SSID called ESSID. Mobile access across a larger area |
