OP Welding

QuestionAnswer
Name three of the principle types of welding? Gas welding, electric arc welding, electric resistance welding.
What are some advantages of gas shielded arc welding? The weld is stronger, more ductile, more corrosion resistant.
Which method of welding is less likely to cause buckling or warping of thin metal sheets? Electric arc (TIG) welding.
What is the purpose of shielding an arc weld with an inert gas? The gas prevents atmospheric oxygen and/or nitrogen from contaminating the weld.
What is a common method of controlling expansion when welding a joint? Place tack weld along the length of the joint.
What is the effect of inadequate penetration in the weld? The weld will be weak.
What is the purpose of flux used with brazing and silver soldering? The flux cleans the base metal by removing any oxide film.
What type of flame is used when torch brazing or silver soldering? A neutral flame.
What must be done to a soldering iron tip to increase the amount of heat transferred from the tip to the work? The tip must be cleaned of all contaminants and properly tinned.
What is the preferred method for welding aluminum? Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding.
What is the preferred method for welding magnesium? Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding.
What precaution must be observed in order to weld titanium? All traces of oxygen and nitrogen must be kept away from the weld area by shielding with an inert gas such as helium or argon.
Describe one type of repair that could be made to a dented steel tube cluster joint? A formed steel patch plate could be welded over the damaged area.
How can a soft flame be obtained without reducing the heat output of the torch? Use a large tip and adjust the gas pressure appropriately.
What factors determine the amount of heat delivered by a gas welding torch? The size of the tip and the amount of gas pressure.
When an oxyacetylene torch is extinguished which valve is turned of first? Turn of the acetylene gas valve first.
When a gas welding project is completed what safety precautions should be accomplished? All the valves turned off and the gas pressures relieved.
What should be done to a heat treated aluminum part after weld repairs are completed? The part must be re heat treated.
Welding magnesium can create a serious safety hazard. What is the nature of this hazard? Magnesium burns with a very hot flame that is very hard to extinguish.
What technique might be used to enable a tight fitting inner sleeve to be inserted into a tubu
What type of weld joint must be used to weld magnesium? A butt weld must be used to avoid possibility of trapping contaminants.
Why must all flux be removed from base material after welding magnesium? Leaving flux on magnesium will cause severe corrosion.
What shielding gases are used gas tungsten arc (TIG) welding? Helium or argon
What is meant by a soft flame? A soft flame is when the torch is adjusted so noise is made and the flame does not push the weld puddle.
What is an advantage of electric arc welding over gas welding? It causes less warping and buckling over the welded material.
What is the result of using a torch tip to large or to small? To large will increase the heat applied and burn holes in the weld, to small will not be hot enough and cause a weak weld.
How do you determine the correct filler rod to be used in welding? A rod to small will not conduct enough heat away from the puddle fast enough and a burned weld will occur, To large will cool the puddle to quickly and not enough penetration will occur
What is the function of flux when soldering? Flux erodes the corrosion from the metal when heated allowing the solder to make a stronger bond.
Why must acid core solder never be used on electrical wire? Because left over acid flux will cause corrosion.
What is brazing? Joining two metals with another non ferrous metal with a lower melting point such as silver soldering, copper brazing and aluminum brazing?
Why is a soft flame desirable for welding aluminum? So it doesn't blow holes in the metal when the weld is formed.
What fuel is used for welding aluminum? Oxygen and hydrogen.
What is the purpose of using flux when welding aluminum? To remove oxides.
What is the safe pressure for acetylene gas? Max 15 psi. at 29.4 psi it is self explosive.
What type of flame should be used for silver soldering? Neutral.
What are the procedures for preparing a metal fuel tank for welding? Must be cleaned with water and detergent, steamed for 30 minutes, fill with c02 and vent through a small hole.
Why is flux used on silver solder? Cleans the material of oxides and ensures a good bond.
Name some types of welding? Electric arc, electric resistance, gas, plasma, brazing
What is the difference in the appearance of an oxidizing flame, a neutral flame, and a reducing flame produced by an oxy-acetylene torch? An oxidizing flame has a pointed inner cone, and the torch makes a hissing noise. A neutral flame has a rounded inner cone, and there is no feather around the inner cone. A reducing flame has a definite feather around the inner cone.
Why must thick plates of metal be preheated before they are welded? Preheating is a method of controlling the expansion and contraction of the metal that is being welded. Preheating minimizes the stresses that are caused when welding thick metal.
What is the difference between brazing and welding? In brazing, the base metal is not melted, but is covered with a low-melting-point alloy. In welding, the base metal is melted.
Is a heat-treated steel part normally repairable by welding? No, welding destroys the heat treatment.
What is an acceptable acetylene line pressure to use when welding with an oxyacetylene rig? About 5 psi.
How much should the bead penetrate the material when welding two pieces of steel with a butt weld? The joint should have 100 percent penetration.
