| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Analog signal | Continuous in time and value |
| Analog data | Information that is continuous |
| Digital signal | Discrete in time and value. Positive voltage/light pulse = 1. Zero voltage/lack of light = 0 |
| Digital data | Information that has discrete states |
| Data modulation | Technology that uses analog signals to transmit digital data. Can send symbols or binary |
| Modem | Translator |
| Amplitude | Analog wave's strength |
| Frequency(Hz) | Number of times amplitude cycles within one second |
| Wavelength | Distance between corresponding wave cycle points, expressed in metres/feet |
| Phase | Wave's progress over time in relationship to fixed point |
| Thoughtput | Measures amount of data transmitted during a time period. Depends on bandwidth and tech |
| Bandwidth(Hz) | Measures difference between highest and lowest frequencies medium can transmit |
| Channel | Distinct communication path between nodes. Separated physically or logically |
| Attenuation | Decrease of signal |
| Latency | Time delay between signal transmission and receipt. AKA fixed delay |
| Round trip time(RTT) | Time for packet to go from sender to receiver, then back from receiver to sender |
