Paint Plastics

George paint quiz 3

QuestionAnswer
What are the basic properties of wash primer? Phosphoric acid and vinyl butyl resin.
Why is wash primer used on surfaces? Etches the surface of metal surfaces to provide corrosion resistant barrier and an adhesive base for finish coats.
What is a binder in paint applications? Wash or zinc chromate primers bind finish coats to the base.
What are the causes of orange peel? Paint viscosity to hi, temperature to hi, spraying in direct sunlight, incorrect spray gun tip, to much air pressure.
The method of positively charging paint ions and grounding the aircraft for application of paint? Electrostatic painting.
What are the befits of electrostatic painting? Strong bond for coating to base and less wastage.
What increases durability and shine in paint finishes and also decreases drying time? Hardner.
What will adding to mush hardener cause in paint finishes? Paint to crack and flake.
Name three types of finish coatings? Polyurethane, Lacquers, Enamels.
Why is polyurethane the preferred finish coating on modern aircraft? More durable than enamel or lacquer.
What are the detrimental factors associated with lacquer paint? Can yellow over time and shrink.
What is the most desirable cement for plexiglass acrylic surfaces? Polymerizable cements, PS-30, Weld-On 40.
What factors should be considered when applying PS-30 or weld on 40? Do not apply when ambient temperature is below 65 degrees F.
What is the correct method of cleaning aircraft windows? Soap and Water?
Describe the method for installing a transparent plastic enclosure? Use equivalent material to manufacturer, Use same mounting method, Cut to size, Never force fit. Use suitable gasketing compound.
What has the greater coefficient of expansion plastics or metals? Plastic.
How should hardware be installed into plastic to avoid damage? Tighten to specifications then back off one full turn.
What type of drill bit should be used on plastics? Specially modified that includes a greater twist without burrs or nicks.
What are the causes of overspray? Improper use of spray gun, Incorrect spray tip, Poor containment or spraying in windy conditions.
What specification outlines requirements for Aircraft identification? FAR 14 PART 45.
What does the N donate on an aircraft serial number? That it is a US registered aircraft.
Where should the N number be located on an aircraft? Vertical tail or side of fuselage.
What are the letter requirements for a serial within FAR 14 PART 45. At least 12 inches hi, Width 2/3 of height and spacing solid lines 1/4 as thick as height.
What are the causes of runs and sags? Low viscosity, coats applied to heavy, Insufficient drying between coats, Spray gun to close.
What is the appearance of blushing? Chalky or cloudy finish.
What causes blushing? High humidity, Moisture on surface, thinner evaporating to quickly.
What are the two main types of spray guns and how do they work? Siphon fed, cup on bottom air siphons paint from gun. Pressure fed, cup is on top of gun and gravity feeds paint from gun.
Describe the characteristics of a thermoplastic? Can be continually softened by the application of heat. Can be dissolved by organic solvents.
This type of plastic once set is infusible and the re application of heat will not soften the material? Thermosetting plastic.
With regard to paint system compatibility old wash primer may be over coated directly with? Epoxy finish.
Describe the appearance of crazing? Micro fissures or cracks on plastic surfaces.
What causes crazing? Excessively bending plastic, using incorrect cleaning agents such as alcohol, gasoline, or acetone.
If masking tape is left on the surface for to long what can occur? It can cure to the surface and be difficult to remove.
What can be used to prevent blushing? Retarder.
Alcohol, Butanol, or Butyl alcohol used to slow the drying process of paint. Retarder.
What precaution should be adhered to with regards to bare aluminum surfaces? Do not touch with bare hands can cause corrosion.
What is the purpose of hydrated and un hydrated wash primer? If humidity is low a hydrated wash primer should be used if humidity is high an un-hydrated wash primer should be used.
What can occur to aluminum if the incorrectly hydrated wash primer is used? Corrosion.
What are the two main classifications of plastics? Thermoplastics, Thermosetting.
What are they two main trade names of acrylic plastics? Lucite, Plexiglass.
Why is cellulose acetate not considered a suitable substitute for acrylic plastic? Dimensionally unstable, turns yellow.
What are proper storage procedures for thermoplastics? Stoor in cool dry place away from steam pipes or heating coils. Stack at 10 degree angle from vertical.
What should be done before heating any transparent plastic material? Remove masking tape, film and adhesive, clean and dry.
All forms used in the forming process should be? Smooth because hot plastic will conform to any uneven or wavy surface.
What methods are used to form plastics? Curve forming, Compound curve, stretch, Male and female dye, Vacuum without forms, Vacuum forming with forms.
What are the appropriate cutting tools used for cutting and/or drilling plastics? Circular saw, Modified drill bit.
What is the desired angle drill bit used on plastics? 150 degrees.
Can a windshield repair be accomplished in the line of sight of the pilot? NO.
What should be done to the edges of a surface patch? Bevel the edges.
What can occur if plastics are rubbed with a dry cloth? Electrostatic build up.
Can windshield repairs be performed on pressurized aircraft? NO
What is the minimum required compressor delivery to the spray gun? 90 PSI 10 CFM
How is paint viscosity measured? Zahn cup.
What are fish eyes? Small holes in the coating caused by improper surface preparation.
