Nervous system

Nervous Tissue and brain

TermDefinition
Two Parts of the Nervous System Central nervous system & Peripheral Nervous system
Central Nervous System Brain and Spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous System Located outside of the CNS, consists of the nerves connected to the CNS with the rest of the body.
Functions of the NS Sensory function integrative function motor function
Sensory function Nerves gather info. from inside the body and from the outside environment
Integrative function Sensory info. brought to the CNS is understood
Motor function Conveys information from the CNS towards the muscles and glands of the body.
Cells of the nervous system Nervous Tissue composed of two cells, Neuroglia and Neurons
Neuroglia (glial cells) the nerve glue
Two types of Glial cells Astrocytes and Ependymal
Astrocytes Most abundant of the glial cells. Support the neurons structure, cover the entire brain and help form a protective barrier. called BLOOD-BRAIN BARRIER
Blood-Brain Barrier Prevents toxic substances in the blood from entering the nervous tissue of the brain and spinal
Ependymal The cells lines the inside of the brain and assist in the formation of Cerebrospinal ( CSF)
Neuron most important in electrical signals the act of a communication network
neurons function sensory, motor, interneurons
(NF) - Sensory neurons carry info. to the CNS
(NF) - Motor neurons carry info. away from CNS
(NF) - Interneurons connections between sensory and motor neurons inside the CNS
Neurons three parts Dendrites, Cell body, and Axon
Dendrites receive signals from other neurons and transmit the signals towards the cell body. ( tree-like )
Cell body the nucleus and the life of a cell
Axon long extension that transmits signals away from the cell body

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
