What is the appearance of a blushing paint finish? Chalky or cloudy.
What finishing defect is the result of a paint room temperature to hi? Pinholes or Blisters.
What causes dope to blush? High humidity, moisture in the spray system, application on a damp surface. Incorrect paint viscosity.
What factors cause spray paint sags and runs? Inadequate surface preparation and paint sprayed to thickly.
What components or parts of the airframe must be protected from damage when using paint stripper? Windshields and windows, plastics, composites, synthetic rubber and fabrics.
What is the function of zinc chromate or wash primers? Inhibit corrosion and provide good bond between metal and topcoats.
Name several common types of paint used on aircraft? Zinc chromate, wash primers, synthetic enamels, acrylic lacquer, polyurethane.
What is the proper thinner to use on with zinc chromate primer? Toluene.
What health and safety precautions must be observed when using toxic solvents and thinners? Respirators and or masks must be worn.
If a spray paint dust causes the surface to look dry and rough what are the causes? Too much air pressure or spray gun to far away from the surface.
What causes orange peel? Spray pressure to hi, thinner dries to fast, cold temperatures or a damp draft.
What regulation governs application of registration numbers on US aircrafts. FAR part 45.
Other than appearance what is another reason for touching up painted surfaces? Reducing or eliminating corrosion.
What references should be used to determine is a control surface checked and re balanced after painting? Manufacturers maintenance manual.
What would the effect be if dope was used over paint or enamel? Dope will dissolve the paint or enamel.
What are the three most common methods for applying paint? Dipping, brushing and spraying.

What primer is used when maximum protection of the metal is desired? Epoxy.
What type of test may be performed to identify existing paint finishes? Oil will soften nitrocellulose and have no affect on acrylic. MEK will pick up pigment from acrylic and have no effect on epoxy.

What are the identification markings required for us registered fixed wing aircraft? The letter N followed by the registration number on both sides of the fuselage or tail. Characters must be equal size and at least 12 inches hi and 2/3 as wide. Solid lines 1/6 as wide as the height and no less than a 1/4 of the width spacing.
What is done to prevent filiform corrosion on components? Ensure the primer is completely cured.
What causes fish eyes? Surface contamination.
What instructions should be followed when covering an aircraft with materials specified in an STC? The instructions that are included in the STC.
What is the principal cause of filiform corrosion? Uncured primer.
