Network #1

From 1.0

TermDefinition
Components of Data Communication Sender, Receiver, Message, Transmission Media, Protocol
Data Representation Text, Number, Images, Audio, Video
Network Connection of communication-capable devices. Consists of nodes, links, and interfaces
Types of nodes End nodes and Connecting (networking) nodes
End nodes Originates or terminates data. Examples - PC, servers, phones
Connecting (networking) nodes Forwards data from one port to another. Examples - modems, switches, access points, routers
Internet Global system of interconnected computer networks. Linked by electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies
Internet standard Tested specification that is followed by those who work with the Internet. Made by Internet Engineer’s Task Force (IETF)
Standardized Bodies Organizations that develop/organize standards so they work in a consistent way. Gives everyone understanding of best (industry) practices
Types of Standardized Bodies International, Regional, Country, Other
Internet Service Provider(ISP) Other - Business providing internet access and more
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE) Other - Promote development and education in electrical engineering and compsci
Standards Council of Canada(SCC) Country - Picks up where the law left off. Doesn’t develop, it helps other organizations participate in international standards
International Telecommunication Union(ITU) International - Radio, Satellite and phone specifications, network infrastructure, tariffs
International Organization for Standardization(ISO) International - Global entity that gives standards to facilitate global exchange of info and trade
Internet Society(ISOC) International - Establish technical standards for the internet
Internet Assigned Numbers Authority(IANA) International - Keep records of available and reserved IPs and determines how they’re given out
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) International - Ultimately responsible for IP addressing and domain name management
World Wide Web Consortium(W3C) Main standards - HTML, CSS, XML, DOM
Residential gateway Ethernet switch, Wi-Fi Access Point(AP), Basic router, Firewalling
Peering a process by which two Internet networks connect and exchange traffic
Request for Comment(RFC) Document from the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) containing specifications about internet and computer networking topics
Physical topologies of Networks Mesh, star, ring, hybrid
Mesh topology Full - each node is connected to every other node. Partial - not all are connected. Expensive topology
Star topology Connected to a central controller node. Point to point. No connection between end nodes
Ring topology Networking nodes (point to point). End nodes are connected to networking nodes. get data on the ring. Used in optical fiber network
Hybrid topology More than one basic topology. Practical. "tree" topology is an extended star
Simplex data flow Data takes one direction
Half duplex Data goes both directions. Can’t send and receive at the same time
Full duplex Send and receive at the same time

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
