PIREPs
Block 4
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Pilot Weather Report (PIREP) In-Flight Reports | a report of meteorological conditions in flight by the pilot |
| 2 Types of PIREP": | Routine (UA) and Urgent (UUA) |
| Urgent (UUA) Pirep | Weather phenomena reported by a pilot that represent a hazard or a potential hazard to flight operations. |
| Urgent (UUA) Pirep Conditions | -Tornadoes, funnel clouds, or waterspouts -Severe or extreme turbulence (including clear air turbulence) -Severe icing -Hail -Low-level wind shear -Volcanic eruptions and volcanic ash clouds |
| ATCTs and TRACONs use PIREPs to: | - Expedite traffic flow in the vicinity of the airport - Provide hazardous weather avoidance procedures |
| FSSs use PIREPS from en route aircraft to | - Brief pilots - Issue in-flight advisories - Issue weather avoidance information |
| ARTCCs use the reports within the center’s area to: | - Expedite the flow of en route traffic - Determine most favorable altitudes - Issue hazardous weather information |
| All ATC facilities and NWS (PIREPs): | - Forward PIREPs into the weather distribution system - Make PIREP information available to pilots and other interested parties |
| NWS uses PIREPs to: | -Verify or amend conditions contained in forecasts and advisories triggering mechanism for issuing advisories - Pilot weather briefings - Study meteorological phenomena |
| Requirements to Solicit PIREPs (1) | - Ceilings at or below 5,000 feet - Visibility 5 miles or less - Thunderstorms and related phenomena - Turbulence (MOD or higher) - Icing (LGT or higher) |
| Requirements to Solicit PIREPs (2) | - Wind shear - Volcanic ash clouds - Detection of sulfur gases (SO2) - When braking action advisories |
| Ensure each PIREP includes: | • Aircraft Location (OV) • Time (TM) • Altitude or flight level (FL) • Type aircraft (TP) • At least one other element |
| When a PIREP includes turbulence include: | -Whether in clouds or in air -Type and intensity |
| When a PIREP includes icing include: | -Type and Intensity -Temperature |
| All ATC: Handle PIREPs as follows | All ATC specialists shall relay pertinent PIREP information to concerned aircraft in a timely manner. |
| En Route ATC: Handle PIREPs as follows | relay all operationally significant PIREPs to the facility Weather Coordinator. |
| Terminal ATC: Handle PIREPs as follows | relay all operationally significant PIREPs to: - Appropriate intra-facility positions - FSS serving the area in which the report was obtained - Other concerned terminal or en route ATC facilities, including non-FAA facilities |
