Separation

Block 1

QuestionAnswer
What is separation? the spacing of aircraft to achieve safe and orderly movement in flight, and while landing or taking off.
Does vertical separation relay on radar or non-radar data? Non-radar. It does not rely on radar data for its application.
RSVM Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) aircraft are those equipped with the required vertical navigation avionics.
The basic minimum altitude vertical separation between IFR aircraft is: 1,000 feet
Non-RVSM aircraft must maintain _____ feet vertical separation must be maintained with all other aircraft 2,000 feet
Lateral Separation the lateral spacing of aircraft at the same altitude by requiring operation on different routes or in different geographical locations.
Longitudinal Separation the longitudinal spacing of aircraft at the same altitude by a minimum distance expressed in units of time or miles.
The standard minima for nonradar longitudinal separation is 20 miles / 10 minutes
The minimum terminal radar separation required for two aircraft 30 NM from the antenna is _____. 3 miles
The minimum en route radar separation required for two aircraft below FL 600 is _____. 5 miles
Clear departing aircraft to fly specified headings that diverge by at least ______ . 45 degrees
When either or both aircraft are 40 miles or more from the antenna, _____ of separation are required. 5 miles
Clear departing aircraft to fly specified headings that diverge by at least ______ . 45 degrees
When both aircraft are less than 40 miles from the antenna, _____ of separation is required. 3 miles
What are some of the factors that should be considered during visual separation? - Closure rate - Aircraft performance - Wake turbulence
Under which conditions can you clear an aircraft for a visual approach? - The plt says the preceding AC in sight and is told to follow -The plt says the airport/rwy in sight but not the preceding AC, radar separation is maintained until visual separation is provided -The plt says the runway is in sight with no preceding AC
On the same runway, what conditions must exist for the preceding departing aircraft before allowing another aircraft to takeoff? - The aircraft must cross the runway end - The aircraft must turn to avert a conflict
Which conditions must exist for preceding departing aircraft before a takeoff roll begins for another aircraft on nonintersecting runways? Has departed and crossed the departure runway
In visual separation, communication must be obtained with _____ . at least one of the aircrafts involced
Runway separation is applied by who? tower controllers only
Distance between aircrafts: if a Category I aircraft is following another Category I or a Category II aircraft 3,000 feet and airborne
Distance between aircrafts: If a Category II aircraft is following either a Category I or II 4,500 feet and airborne
Distance between aircrafts: If either aircraft is a Category III 6,000 feet and airborne
Holding is used for? -Traffice en route -Weather at destination -arrival delays -spacing/flow control
What must a controller ensure when directing aircraft to hold over different fixes at the same altitude? Holding pattern airspaces don’t overlap
Which of the following procedures are applied by ATC for a typical holding pattern with a standard pattern? -Right turns -One-minute legs
