TermDefinitionExample
Git A distributed version control system used to track changes in source code during software development. Installing Git for managing a web project.
GitHub An online platform for hosting and collaborating on software projects using Git. Creating a GitHub repository for collaborative development.
Repository (Repo) A data structure in Git used to track changes and history of a project. git init to create a new local repository.
Commit A record in Git of changes made to a set of files, along with a message describing the changes. git commit -m "Added new feature"
Branch A separate line of development in Git, used for developing features, fixing bugs, etc. Creating a feature branch in Git.
Forking Copying a repository from one user's account to another, allowing independent development. Forking a repository on GitHub to contribute to a project.
Merge The action of integrating changes from one Git branch into another. Using git merge to combine changes from two branches.
Pull Request A method of submitting contributions to a project on GitHub, requesting the original repository to pull your changes. Creating a pull request on GitHub after adding a feature.
Clone Creating a local copy of a remote Git repository. Using git clone to copy a GitHub repository locally.
Version Control A system that records changes to a file or set of files over time so that specific versions can be recalled later. Using Git to manage different versions of a project.
Conflict Resolution The process of resolving incompatible changes made by different branches in Git. Manually resolving merge conflicts in Git.
Collaborative Development Working with others to develop software, often using tools like Git and GitHub for coordination. Collaborating on a project using GitHub issues and pull requests.
