Simile | a comparison between two things, usually using the words 'like' and 'as', |
Metaphor | a comparison between two things that are otherwise unrelated. With metaphor, the qualities of one thing are figuratively carried over to another. |
Personification | is a literary device that gives human characteristics to nonhuman things or inanimate objects. |
Imagery | words that trigger the reader to recall images, or mental pictures, that engage one of the five senses: sight, sound, taste, smell, and touch. |
Hyerbole | is an extreme exaggeration specifically for literary or rhetorical effect. |
Symbolism | is the use of any person, situation, or object to represent an idea of some sort. |
Allusion | an implied or indirect reference to a person, event, or thing or to a part of another text. |
Alliteration | is the repetition of the same sound at the start of a series of words in succession whose purpose is to provide an audible pulse that gives a piece of writing a lulling, lyrical, and/or emotive effect. |
Treatment /mistreatment /expectations of women | Women have responsibility to protect each other. Women are isolated in her community so they have less power. |
Simple Joys/ Escapism | Sally get married to leave. They try to pretend they are somewhere better. |
The differences between the rich and the poor | Ezperanza always dreams of better home. |

Need for freedom/ defiance | Esperanza wants freedom from her current life. |
verbal irony | is when what is said is the opposite of the literal meaning. One type of verbal irony is sarcasm, where the speaker says the opposite of what he or she means in order to show contempt or mock. |
dramatic irony | a literary device by which the audience's or reader's understanding of events or individuals in a work surpasses that of its characters. |
situational irony | is when the outcome is the opposite or completely different from what was expected. Situational irony involves the result of a situation not matching with your expectations, such as a baker being allergic to flour. |
