Anatomical Direction
Anatomical descriptions of movements surrounding joints
| Term | Definition |

| Cranial | of or relating to the bones of the head that cover the brain |
| Caudal | of, relating to, or being a tail |
| Superior | toward the head end of the body: Upper |
| Posterior (or dorsal) | the back of a structure, or a structure found toward the back of the body |
| Anterior (or ventral) | in front of" or "the front surface of |
| Inferior | towards the bottom or away from the head-end of the body |
| Proximal | nearer to the center (trunk of the body) or to the point of attachment to the body |
| Distal | a part of the body that is farther away from the center of the body than another part |
| Medial | toward the middle or center |
| Lateral | to the side of, or away from, the middle of the body |
| Lateral View | side view of the body |
| Anterior View | front view of the body |
| Flexion | a movement that decreases the angle between two body parts |
| Extension | a movement that increases the angle between two body parts |
| Lateral Flexion | Movement of a body part to the side |
| Rotation | movements made about the longitudinal axis and in the transverse plane |
| Elevation | raising or lifting up a body part |
| Depression | lowering a body part |
| Abduction | the motion of a limb or appendage away from the midline of the body |
| Adduction | when you move a limb/body part towards the center of the body |
| External Rotation | rotating a joint away from the midline |
| Internal Rotation | rotating a joint towards the midline |
| Dorsi Flexion | he decreased angle between the dorsal side of the body part and the bone or bones that are proximal to the body |
| Plantar Flexion | he extension of the ankle so that the foot points down and away from the leg |
| Inversion | the movement of the sole towards the median plane – so that the sole faces in a medial direction |
| Eversion | a type of movement at the ankle joint that involves turning outward the sole of the foot away from the body's midline |
