Motherboards, Processors and memory

TermDefinition
PC Personal Computer
Motherboard/System board/mainboard Printed Circuit Board (PCB) a conductive series of pathways laminated to a non conductive substrate that lines the bottom of the computer. It connects all the components of the computer together.
Form factor (design) of motherboards ATX (Advanced Technology eXtended ITX (Information Technology eXtended)
ATX (Advanced Technology eXtended Classic AT style motherboards for older large PC
ITX (Information Technology eXtended) small form factor motherboards for MINI, NANO, PICO AND MOBILE platforms
Bus Architecture Path types of how data is sent from one pc component to another over synchronized pathways. Parallel bus architecture uses multiple lanes
Chipset A collection of chips or circuits that perform interface and peripheral functions for the processor
Northbridge A subset of a motherboards chipset that performs management of high-speed peripheral communications. Northbridge is responsible for CPU, CACHE, PCI CONTROLLER, MEMORY CONTROLLER
Southbridge subset of the chipset is responsible for providing support to the slower onboard peripherals (USB,SERIAL, PARALLEL ATA, PARALLEL PORTS, SERIAL PORTS ETC) Any component other than CPU, CACHE, PCI CONTROLLER, MEMORY CONTROLLER
Expansion slots slots used to install various devices in the computer to expand the computers capabilities (EXAMPLE: Video, network and sound cards)
PCI (PERIPHERAL COMPONENT INTERCONNECT) slots older tech slots about 3 inches long. They worked with early Pentium class processors. They operated on 33 mhz or 66mhz.
PCI Express (PCIe) The most common expansion slot architecture that is being used by motherboards. Faster than AGP (accelerated graphics port) PCIe has no plug compatibility with PCI or AGP. PCIe uses the concept of lanes.
Up-plugging The ability to use higher-capability slots with for a lesser adapter. This means you can use a smaller card with a longer slot
riser card a card that provides that other expansion cards plug into.
Random Access Memory (RAM) PC Memory.
Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM) Memory chips. They come in 168,184 240 and 288 pin configurations
Virtual Memory/Virtual RAM Space on the hard drive that involves swap file or paging file PAGEFILE.SYS. This allows the HARD DRIVE to act as RAM
Cache memory Memory that sits between CPU and RAM. Very fast form of memory forged from static RAM. Memory that is used to improve memory performance.
L1,L2,L3 CACHE,RAM,HDD/SDD Types of memory increasing in size
CPU Central Processing Unit The "brain" of the computer. The main processor on the mother board
PGA Pin Grid Array A type of socket used to plug in the CPU. It is a plug where you line pins into holes in the socket.
LGA Land Grid Array A type of socket that places the CPU delicate pins in a sturdier case to avoid damage
Multi Socket motherboard Mother board type with multiple sockets for CPUS
IDE Integrated Drive Electronics standard that allows for communication between motherboard and storage devices.
Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (Serial ATA (SATA) Technology that provides orderly transmission of data to a single path.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
