Graves Smartphone Sensors
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Magnetometer | Tells your phone which way is north |
GPS (Global Positioning System) | Tells your phone where on the planet it is by communicating with three satellites in space |
Proximity Sensor | Tells the phone when something is close to the screen so that users' faces don't activate any screen buttons |
Gyroscope | Tells which way in three dimensions the phone is facing; sideways, vertically, or front to back |
Accelerometer | Tells the phone about changes in movement speed |
Thermometer | Tells the phone the temperature around itself--usually used to prevent the phone from turning on if it's too hot |
Hygrometer | Tells the phone the humidity (moisture) around itself |
Barometer | Tells the phone the air pressure around itself--usually used to determine distance from sea level (altitude) |
Ambient Light Sensor | Tells the phone the light level around it. Can determine whether to flash for photos and whether the screen should brighten or dim to save battery power |
Gyroscope + Magnetometer Combo | Tells the phone about tilts and turns to help determine movement according to a map |
Accelerometer + Barometer Combo | Tells the phone what types of transportation the phone may be on and changes in altitude to determine takeoffs and landings |
Microphone | Tells the phone when and what sounds are around the phone and their volume levels |
