Graves Smartphone Sensors

TermDefinition
Magnetometer Tells your phone which way is north
GPS (Global Positioning System) Tells your phone where on the planet it is by communicating with three satellites in space
Proximity Sensor Tells the phone when something is close to the screen so that users' faces don't activate any screen buttons
Gyroscope Tells which way in three dimensions the phone is facing; sideways, vertically, or front to back
Accelerometer Tells the phone about changes in movement speed
Thermometer Tells the phone the temperature around itself--usually used to prevent the phone from turning on if it's too hot
Hygrometer Tells the phone the humidity (moisture) around itself
Barometer Tells the phone the air pressure around itself--usually used to determine distance from sea level (altitude)
Ambient Light Sensor Tells the phone the light level around it. Can determine whether to flash for photos and whether the screen should brighten or dim to save battery power
Gyroscope + Magnetometer Combo Tells the phone about tilts and turns to help determine movement according to a map
Accelerometer + Barometer Combo Tells the phone what types of transportation the phone may be on and changes in altitude to determine takeoffs and landings
Microphone Tells the phone when and what sounds are around the phone and their volume levels
