What is Homeostasis? A term used to describe the relative constant state by the body.-- Internal environment around the body remain constant.
Give three examples of homeostasis? 1. Temperature Regulation, 2. Regulation of blood carbon dioxide level, 3. Regulation of blood glucose level
What does DNA molecule consists of ? It consist of two long chains of deoxyribonucleotides coiled into a double-helix shape.
What are essential amino acids? Essential amino acids—eight amino acids that cannot be produced by the adult human body
What is catabolism? Catabolism—breaks large molecules into smaller ones; usually releases energy.
What is anabolism? Anabolism—builds large molecules from smaller ones; usually consumes energy
What is Transcription? mRNA forms along a segment of one strand of DNA, tRNA and rRNA are formed by a similar mechanism
What is Cell growth? Cell Growth depends on using genetic information in DNA to make the structural and functional proteins needed for cell survival
What are four principle types of tissues? Types of tissues are 1. Epithelial tissue 2. Connective tissue 3. Muscle tissue 4. Nervous tissue
What are the primary gem layers? Primary germ layers a. Endoderm b. Mesoderm c. Ectoderm
What are the types of muscle tissues? Types of muscle tissues are : 1. Skeletal, or striated voluntary 2. Smooth, or nonstriated involuntary, or visceral 3. Cardiac, or striated involuntary
What are three types of cartilage? Three types of cartilage are 1. Hyaline 2. Fibrocartilage 3. Elastic
What is the largest organ in the body? Skin (integument) is body’s largest organ.
What is the superficial layer of the skin? Stratum corneum (horny layer)—most superficial layer; dead cells filled with keratin (barrier area)
What shape is the hyoid bone, and where is it located? U-shaped bone located just above the larynx and below the mandible
What are the segments of the vertebral column? Segments of the vertebral column: 1. Cervical vertebrae, 2. Thoracic vertebrae, 3. Lumbar vertebrae, 4. Sacrum 5. Coccyx
What are the bones of the lower extremity? Consists of the bones of the hip, thigh, leg, ankle, and foot.
What are pelvic girdle made up of? Pelvic girdle is made up of the sacrum and the two coxal bones bound tightly by strong ligaments
What are intervertebral disc made up of ? Intervertebral disks are made up of two parts a. Annulus fibrosus—disk’s outer rim, made of fibrous tissue and fibrocartilage b. Nucleus pulposus—disk’s central core, made of a pulpy, elastic substance
What are muscles composed of? Muscles are composed of bundles of muscle fibers held together by fibrous connective tissue
