Assignment 1
Cell Function-Anatomy
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| diffusion | a natural phenomenon caused by the tendency of small particles to spread out evenly within any given space |
| concentration gradient | measurable difference in concentration from one area to another |
| simple diffusion | When molecules pass directly through the phospholipid membrane |
| Osmosis | the movement of water through a semipermeable membrane |
| semipermeable membrane | allows water to pass through the membrane, but blocks the passage of at least one solute |
| Aquaporins (AQPs) | It is the pres-ence of AQP channels that greatly increases membrane permeability to water |
| osmotic pressure | is the pressure that prevents the movement of water by osmosis from pure water into the solution. |
| Filtration | passing of water and permeable solutes through a membrane by the force of hydrostatic pressure |
| What happens during Phagocytosis? | microorganisms or other large particles are en-gulfed by the plasma membrane and enter the cell in vesicles that have pinched off from the membrane |
| What happens during Endocytosis? | the plasma membrane “traps” some extracellular material and brings it into the cell. |
