Assignment 1

Cell Function-Anatomy

TermDefinition
diffusion a natural phenomenon caused by the tendency of small particles to spread out evenly within any given space
concentration gradient measurable difference in concentration from one area to another
simple diffusion When molecules pass directly through the phospholipid membrane
Osmosis the movement of water through a semipermeable membrane
semipermeable membrane allows water to pass through the membrane, but blocks the passage of at least one solute
Aquaporins (AQPs) It is the pres-ence of AQP channels that greatly increases membrane permeability to water
osmotic pressure is the pressure that prevents the movement of water by osmosis from pure water into the solution.
Filtration passing of water and permeable solutes through a membrane by the force of hydrostatic pressure
What happens during Phagocytosis? microorganisms or other large particles are en-gulfed by the plasma membrane and enter the cell in vesicles that have pinched off from the membrane
What happens during Endocytosis? the plasma membrane “traps” some extracellular material and brings it into the cell.
