Network Types

Network Types (2.7)

TermDefinition
LAN (Local) Devices in a building/very nearby. - high bandwidth/high-speed connection between them - Ethernet and 802.11 wireless
WAN (Wide) Devices in another city/country/continent. - connects LANs across distances - slower than LAN because they're so far - connected through terrestrial or non-terrestrial links (satellite, fiber, etc.)
PAN (Personal) Devices that are VERY close together. - uses Bluetooth, NFC, IR, etc.
MAN (Metropolitan) Devices connected within the same city. - bigger than a LAN, smaller than a WAN
SAN (Storage) Devices that provide centralized storage with a LARGE capacity. - requires a LOT of bandwidth
WLAN (Wireless LAN) Devices that connect within a small range, like a building/smaller (like LAN!) - coverage extended with access points - like a Downtown area or a college campus
