Camera Movement

Static When the camera is in a fixed position. // Purpose: Great for dialogue, giving a painting-like look, and enhancing a certain character's POV typically portraying distant and cold feelings.
Slow Pan When the camera is moving horizontally, but staying in a fixed position // Purpose: Used to demonstrate movement or to reveal something. Slow builds anticipation.
Whip Pan When the camera is moving horizontally, but staying in a fixed position; fast. // Purpose: Can increase intensity or show the connection of two characters whether they are positive or negative.
Tilt Directs the camera upwards or downwards, but in a fixed location. // Purpose: Captures something up high or down low, reveals information, or can portray characters as weak or dominant.
Push In Moves camera towards the subject. // Purpose: Focuses on the subject, feeling closer to them/it.
Push Out Moves camera away from subject. // Purpose: Reveals the context of the scene, detaches the audience from the character.
Zoom In Camera is not moving, the focal length of the camera’s lens is becoming bigger. // Purpose: Draws attention to a specific detail.
Zoom Out Camera is not moving, the focal length of the camera’s lens is becoming smaller. // Purpose: Reveals a scene's context.
Crash Zoom A fast zoom, lots of editing. // Purpose: Create dramatic or comedic effect.
Dolly Zoom Utilized zooms and dolly movement to create the vertigo effect. // Purpose: Replicates characters' unsettling feelings.
Camera Roll Turns the camera on its long axis, 360. // Purpose: Can match character movement during conflict, gives an unsettling effect.
Tracking Follows the character. // Purpose: Gives an uneasy feeling that the character is benign followed; makes the audience anticipate the characters' destination.
Trucking Camera moves horizontally. // Purpose: Gives a “story-book” feel, could reveal something or follow something.
Arc Orbits around a subject, either horizontally or vertically. // Purpose: Creates dynamic movement, often used with heroes; could create intimacy, panic, or a dizzy effect.
Boom Moves camera up or down. // Purpose: Small movement can reveal information; large movement can be used to follow a character. Either can indicate a character’s emotions with the upwards or downwards movement.
Random Movement Camera shake, accidental zoom, or other random movement. // Purpose: Gives a more intimate, raw effect.
