1. Discover | Device locates a DHCP server on local network. - Device sends a broadcast to the entire network to udp/67; the broadcast will be directed to DHCP servers through switches and routers. |
2. Offer | Server offers IP address to device - All DHCP servers (there may be multiple on one local network for redundancy) will send IP address offers. |
3. Request | Device requests IP address chosen from its offers. - The device will send another broadcast over udp/67 to all devices on subnet to take an offer. |
4. Acknowledge | DHCP acknowledges request and assigns the IP address - DHCP server sends message back to device over udp/68 to acknowledge acceptance of offer, then the IP address is assigned to the device. |
