Legal and Ethical Issues Definitions

Design right Protects how something looks
Patent Protects how an invention works or what it does
Trademark Protects the name or logo used to identify a business or product
Cracking Illegally breaking into a computer system

Personal data Data that relates to an living individual who can be identified from it
Data subject An individual who is the subject of personal data
Data controller Someone who determines why and how personal data is processed
Data processor Someone who processes data on behalf of a data controller
Digital rights management Application of control of technologies to limit the use of digital media
Proprietary software Software where the owner places restrictions, on its use, copying and modifications
Robot A movable mechanical structure that can sense its surroundings and manipulate things
Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 it is an offence to intercept a message sent via public or private telecommunication systems
Health and Safety Regulations 1992 Employees must have training and information on how to use the equipment safely
