Email a text communication system over the Internet (not in real-time)
IM (definition) a text-based communication that goes through the phone network directly between two devices--often in real-time
Server a computer used to manage and provide access to a network or its resources
Client a computing device used to access networks or their resources
Email Client An app or website that allows users to access, create, store, and manage email (like gmail, yahoo mail, outlook, hotmail, or mail app)
Inbox the virtual location (a folder) of email someone has received--like a mailbox
Recipient the person receiving something
SMTP (definition) a kind of server that functions like a post office
SMTP (abbreviation) Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
POP3 (definition) a kind of server that functions like a mail carrier to deliver email
POP (abbreviation) Post Office Protocol
DNS (definition) a kind of server that functions like an address book or directory for the Internet
DNS (abbreviation) Domain Name Server
IP address a series of numbers that are used as the Internet address for a computer or website--like a home address (like 192.85.102.63)
IP (abbreviation) Internet Protocol
IM (abbreviation) Instant Messaging
recipient name The part of an email address that refers to a specific user account--everything BEFORE the @ symbol (like the bob in bob@gmail.com)
domain name The part of a URL or email address that tells which part of the Internet an account or web site belongs to--everything AFTER the @ symbol (like the gmail.com in bob@gmail.com)
privacy note email and IM are not really private. They can be kept for a long time. Don't send anything you wouldn't mind lots of other people reading
manners notes be polite when you communicate online
safety notes don't talk to strangers online--people can lie about who they are
