Terms of Position and Location
| Term | Definition |

| Superior | above or higher |
| Inferior | below or lower |
| Anterior | toward the front of the body |
| Posterior | toward the back of the body |
| Ventral | front side of body; example: the mammary area is on the ventral side of the body |
| Dorsal | back side of the body; example: the buttocks are on the dorsal side of the body. |
| Medial | towards the midline of the body |
| Lateral | away from the midline of the body |
| Internal | within or anterior to |
| External | outside or exterior to |
| Superficial | toward the surface |
| Deep | within to interior to; example: the deep veins of the legs are surrounded by muscles |
| Central | the main part; example: the brain is part of the blank system |
| Peripheral | extending from the main part |
| Proximal | Closer to the origin |
| Distal | farther from the origin |
| Parietal | pertaining to the wall of a cavity |
| Visceral | pertaining to the organs within a cavity |
