| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Physical layer | Bits over a physical medium (wires, cables, etc.) |
| Data link layer | How data moves in the physical link of a network (measured in frames). |
| Network layer | Decides which path data will take (packets). |
| Transport layer | Data transmitted using TCP and UDP. |
| Session layer | Maintains the connection between communicating ports sending data. |
| Presentation layer | Ensures data is in the correct format, and where encryption occurs. |
| Application layer | Human-computer interaction layer just below the application itself, where applications can access network services. |
