A+ Network Hardware

A+ Network Hardware (2.2)

TermDefinition
Routers - Connects a network of devices to the internet - Directs traffic between IP subnets - Uses IP addresses in packets to determine where to send it - Found in layer 3 (Network)
Switches - Connects devices together, switches can be connected together to form a 'network' (topologies) - Uses MAC addresses in packets to determine where to send it - Have ASIC for quick data transfer
Managed switches Connects all devices together, but multiple management options, like prioritizing traffic, redundancy with STP, VLAN, port mirroring, etc.
Unmanaged switches Just to connect all devices together; no configuration options. Less expensive.
Access points Provides a link from a wireless network to a wired network. Forwards based on MAC address.
Patch panel Connects all computers in a large building; keep wires more organized, can use a tone generator/probe to find where wires lead.
Firewall - Filters traffic by port number - Layer 4 device - Encrypts traffic in/out of network
Power over Ethernet (PoE) - Can provide power using an ethernet cable. - Injectors provide power TO ethernet cable, not FROM switch.
PoE - IEEE 802.3af-2003 - 15.4 watts DC power, 360 mA max current
PoE+ - IEEE 802.3at-2009 - 25.5 watts DC power, 600 mA max current
PoE++ - IEEE 802.3bt-2018 - 51 W (Type 3), 600 mA max current - 71.3 W (Type 4), 960 mA max current
Hub Traffic going into one port is repeated to all other ports. Data can only be received/sent, not both at once. Legacy tech.
Cable modem - Broadband communication; multiple frequencies over a single wire. - Used for TV, phone lines, and internet - Faster/more reliable than DSL
Digital subscriber line (DSL) modem - Your telephone company provides internet - Downloading is faster than uploading - Not as fast as cable
Optical Network Terminal (ONT) - Connects an ISP fiber network to a copper network - Wiring inside house is YOUR responsibility; outside is ISP's
Network Interface Card (NIC) - All network devices have NICs. - Implements the physical layer of a network - Different types of NICs depending on network type.
Software-defined networking (SDN) Devices for cloud-based networking. - Data layer: Everything that happens at packet level - Control layer: Forwards/controls packet traffic - Application layer: Configure/manage devices

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
