Fiction Terms 1-23

Vocabulary for the first section of notes.

TermDefinition
Plot is the basic sequence of events in a story.
Exposition the beginning or start of the story.
Rising Action A series of events leading up to the climax
Climax The most exciting part of the plot
Falling Action Action that follows the climax
Resolution Either the character defeats the problem, learns to live with the problem, or the problem defeats the character.
Setting is where a story takes place in time and location
Character The person, animals, and things participating in a story
Protagonist is the main character of the story
Antagonist The character who DIRECTLY opposes the protagonist and causes problems for him.
Flat Characters is one that often fits in a stereotype.
Rounds Characters is one that is multi-dimensional just like real people.
Static Characters character does NOT change
Dynamic Characters character is one that changes over the course of the story.
Conflict A struggle between forces that create the tension and suspense in the story.
External conflict A struggle between a character and outside forces.
Internal conflict A struggle that takes place inside a character’s mind.
Character vs. Character This is an external conflict between two characters.
Character vs. Nature A struggle between a character and a force of nature such as a fire, storm, earthquake, animal, etc.
Character vs. Society A character struggles against laws or beliefs of group.
Character vs. Supernatural Struggle between a character and something abnormal, such as ghosts, omens, superstitions
Character vs. Technology A struggle where the character fights against future technology.
Character vs. Self Is a problem between the character and their own thinking.
