Chapter 13: Unions and Management Issues
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Labor Union | organized groups of workers that bargain with employers to improve members' pay, job security, and working conditions |
| "Right to work" states | employees are not required to join a union, and a company can ask someone to leave if part of one |
| Collective Bargaining | a process when workers and management engage to review discrepancies between what workers want (salary +, benefits) and what management is willing to give |
| Mediation | an impartial 3rd party makes *recommendations* for reaching an agreement |
| Arbitration | a 3rd party imposes a binding agreement |
| Grievances | complaints over contract-related matters that are resolved by union representatives and employee supervisors (can be against coworkers as well) |
| Pros of Unions | creates better working conditions, increases benefits, job security, higher wages, and increases income equality |
| Cons of Unions | often more costly for business, can cause harm to the economy, increase cost of labor, allows less effective employees to keep their jobs |
| Strike | workers leave their jobs until the issue is settled (can lead to management working) |
| Picketing | workers congregate outside the workplace to publicize their position |
| Boycotting | workers and other consumers are urged to refrain from buying an employer's products |
| Lockout | closing the workplace to workers |
| Strikebreakers | non-union workers who are willing to cross picket lines to replace strikers |
