TermDefinition
Exteroceptors Somatic sense receptor located on the body surface
Visceroceptors (interoceptors) Somatic sense receptor located in the internal visceral organs
Proprioceptors Receptor located in the muscles, tendons, and joints; allows the body to perceive its position relative to surroundings
Diabetic neuropathy Retinal damage caused by diabetes mellitus
Visceral pain Pain emanating from the internal thoracic, pelvic, or abdominal organs
Somatic pain Sharp “take your breath away” type of pain associated with superficial injury or trauma; also called fast pain
Olfactory Relating to the sense of smell
Anosmia The inability to smell
Equilibrium A balance between opposing elements
Otoliths Tiny “ear stones” composed of protein and calcium carbonate
