| Artificial Intelligence (AI) | The use of computer systems that are able to perform tasks that had typically required the use of human intelligence. |
| Blockchain | A distributed database that is stored on multiple computers that may or may not be in the same location. |
| Cloud computing | The housing of data in a cloud environment, which is a commercially maintained site on the Internet. |
| Decryption | Interpretation of data being received in encrypted (scrambled) form. |
| Evidence-based medicine (EBM) | Diagnostic and treatment protocols that are based on proven research and documented best practices. |
| Health Informatics | The management of automated health information; the technological side of managing health information—the design, development, structure, implementation, integration, and management of the technical aspects of electronic (automated) health record-keeping. |
| Health Information exchange (HIE) | The movement or sharing of information between healthcare entities in a secure manner and in keeping with nationally recognized standards. |
| Health Information management (HIM) | A profession that encompasses services in planning, collecting, aggregating, analyzing, and disseminating individual patient and aggregate clinical data (in paper or electronic format). |
| Local area network (LAN) | A network linking computers and related devices that are physically close to one another such as within a building. |
| Patient portal | A method of accessing portions of one’s own health information from the care provider’s or hospital’s electronic health record. |

| Personal digital assistant (PDA) | A mobile device that is small enough to fit in one’s hand yet allows access to local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and the Internet; may also have telephone capability. |
| Personal health record (PHR) | A record, kept by the patient, that contains a person’s health history, immunization status, current and past medications, allergies, and instructions given by a care provider; it often includes patient education materials as well. |
