Medical Liability Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Criminal law | Laws that deal with crimes against the state or society (e.g., theft, assault, murder). Punishments may include jail or fines. |
| Civil Law- | Laws that deal with disputes between individuals or organizations (e.g., contracts, property, or medical malpractice cases). |
| Tort | A wrongful act, other than a crime, that causes harm to someone and can lead to a civil lawsuit. |
| Prudent | Acting with good judgment and caution; making wise decisions. |
| Scope of practice | The legal duties, responsibilities, and limits of what a healthcare worker is allowed to do. |
| Malpractice | Professional negligence; when a healthcare worker fails to meet the accepted standard of care & causes harm to a patient. |
| Liable | Legally responsible for something. If found guilty in a civil case, a person may have to pay damages. |
| Diagnosis | The identification of a disease or medical condition based on a patient’s signs, symptoms, tests, and medical history. |
| Informed consent | Permission a patient gives for treatment after being fully informed of the risks, benefits, and alternatives. |
| Resultant | Something that happens as a direct outcome or consequence of another action. |
| Defamatory | False statements that damage another person’s reputation. |
