| Durable Power of Attorney | A legal document that designates a person to make all decisions on your behalf, when you can't |
| Living will | a legal document where you specify your desired medical treatments in advance. |
| continuity of care | the process by which the patient and physician are cooperatively involved in ongoing health care management |
| ombudsman | a social worker, nurse, or trained volunteer who ensures that patients are properly cared for and respected |
| licensure | permission is given to a person to a to operate or to work in a profession |
| certification | a process by which an individual is evaluated and recognized as meeting certain predetermined criteria and standards |
| registration | a list of individuals on an official record who meet the qualifications for occupation |
| relevant | pertain to, or having to do with, the patient/client |
| written consent | a person knowingly, without duress or coercion, clearly and explicitly consents to the proposed therapy in writing |
| Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) | a law that regulations ensuring the privacy of patient information |
| exempt | to be free or released from some liability or requirement to which others are subject |
| contracts | a legally binding exchange or promises or an agreement between parties that the law will enforce |
| principal | first or among the first in importance or rank |
| implied contracts | contracts in which some terms are not specifically stated, but are understood based on the nature of the transaction |
| expressed contract | contracts in which terms are written out in the document |
| agent | a person or business authorized to act on another's behalf |
| directive | something that serves to guide or impel towards an action or goal |
| legal disability | if a person has a physical or mental impairment that limits their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities |
| minor | under the legal age of full responsibility. |
