| parry | ward off ( a weapon or attack) with a countermove |
| gallant | (of a person or their behavior); heroic |
| nullify | make no use of or value; cancel out |
| respite | a short period of rest or relief from something difficult or unpleasant |
| lurid | presented in a vividly shocking or sensational terms |
| adversary | one's opponent in a contest, conflict, or dispute |
| burgeoning | beginning to grow or increase rapidly; flourishing |
| furtive | attempting to avoid notice or attention, typically because of guilt or belief that discovery would lead to trouble; secretive |
| parch | make or become dry through intense heat |
| mollify | appease the anger or anxiety of (someone) |
| poignant | evoking a keen sense of sadness or regret |
| gullible | easily persuaded to believe something; credulous |
| writhe | make continual twisting, squirming movements of the body |
| pernicious | having a harmful effect, especially in a gradual or subtle way |
