CN I Olfactory Sensory; smell
CN II Optic Sensory; vision
CN III Oculomotor Motor; controls four of the six eye muscles (inferior oblique, superior rectus, inferior rectus, and medial rectus), causes pupils to constrict, and adjust lens for close vision.
CN IV Trochlear Motor; controls superior oblique eye muscle that goes through the trochlea (pulley)
CN V Trigeminal S & M; Sensory nerves to face for touch, temperature, pain; motor to muscles of mastication; (three terminating branches: ophthalmic, maxillary, & mandibular)
CN VI Abducens Motor; controls lateral rectus eye muscle that abducts the eye
CN VII Facial S & M; main motor nerve to the face controlling muscles of facial expression, control salivary (submandibular and sublingual) for salivation and lacrimal glands for tearing (parasympathetic fibers), taste from the anterior two-thirds of the tongue
CN VIII Vestibulocochlear Sensory; transmits information about equilibrium and sound from vestibular apparatus and cochlea
CN IX Glossopharyngeal S & M; controls swallowing muscles in pharynx/larynx, saliva from parotid gland. Sensory: taste in pharynx & posterior tongue, chemoreceptors in carotid arteries (H+, CO2, O2), baroreceptors of carotid arteries (monitor blood pressure)
CN X Vagus S & M ; controls swallowing muscles in pharynx/larynx, motor to heart, lungs, abdominal viscera to regulate heart rate, breathing, & digestive activity. Taste from base of tongue/epiglottis. AKA vagabond/wonderer
CN XI Accessory Motor; accessory control trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles and accessory control of muscles in pharynx/larynx for swallowing
CN XII Hypoglossal Motor; controls movements of the tongue (glossip)
