NETW202 Ch 10

Planning and Cabling Networks

QuestionAnswer
channel service unit/data service unit (CSU/DSU) A device that connects a local digital telephone loop for a WAN circuit to a serial interface on a network device, typically connecting to a router. The CSD/DSU performs a physical (Layer 1) signaling on WAN circuits.
console port A port on Cisco devices to which a terminal or computer with a terminal emulator is connected to the network device in order to communicate and configure the network device.
data communications equipment (DCE) Provides a physical connection to the network, forwards traffic, and supplies a clocking signal used to synchronize data transmission between DCE and DTE devices.
data terminal equipment (DTE) Device at the user end of a user-network interface that serves as a data source, destination, or both. DTE connects to a data network through a DCE device and typically uses clocking signals generated by the DCE.
electromagnetic interference (EMI) Interference by magnetic signals caused by electricity. EMI can cause reduced data integrity and increased error rates on transmission channels. Electrical current creates magnetic fields, which in turn cause other electrical currents in nearby wires
fiber-optics The glass fibers inside certain cables over which light is transmitted to encode 0s and 1s.
media-dependent interface (MDI) The normal operation of Ethernet ports on a hub. In this mode, the mapping of the wire pairs used in the hub port is in a normal configuration.
media-dependent interface, crossover (MDIX) MDIX is an alternative operation of Ethernet ports on a hub. In this mode, the mapping of the wire pairs used in the hub port is in a crossover configuration. Allows the use of a straight-through cable to connect two hubs together.
radio frequency interference (RFI) Radio frequencies that create noise that interferes with information being transmitted across unshielded copper cabling.
terminal emulator Network application in which a computer runs software that makes it appear to a remote host as a directly attached terminal.
Winchester connector A 34-pin female v.35 serial connector.
You have been given the 178.5.0.0/16 network and are assigned to create as many possible subnets with at least 100 hosts. What subnet mask will you use? 255.255.255.128, 255.255.255.192, 255.255.255.0, or 255.255.254.0? 255.255.255.128
What would be the most efficient subnet mask to use if you needed as many subnets as possible with 32 hosts each? 255.255.255.240, 255.255.255.0, 255.255.255.225, or 255.255.255.192? 255.255.255.192
What is the valid host range for the subnet 154.65.128.0 255.255.255.248.0? 154.65.128.1-154.65.135.254
100BASE-FX uses fiber cabling and supports full duplex up to a distance of __________ meters? 2000 meters
True or False: A T568A cabling code states that pin 1 and pin 2 would be a green pair of wires. True
List where a straight-through UTP cable would be used in connecting network devices. Switch to router, PC to switch, or PC to hub
List where a crossover UTP cable would be used in connecting network devices. Switch to Switch, Switch to Hub, Hub to hub, PC to PC, or PC to Router.
Describe the purposes of and differences between DCE and DTE WAN serial cables and devices. DCE is a device supplying the clocking to another device; typically on the WAN provider side of link. DTE is a device that receives clocking from another device and adjusts accordingly; typically located on the WAN customer side of the link.
List criteria that should be considered when selecting a switch for a LAN. Cost, Cable/Wireless, Speed, Ports, Expandability, Manageability, and Features.
Give examples of the different types of hosts and network devices that require IP addresses. User computers, Servers, and end devices such as a printer, IP Phone, or IP Camera.
List 3 reasons for subnetting a network. Managing broadcast traffic, Similar network requirements, and security.
List the five factors to consider when selecting the type of physical media to deploy in the LAN. Cable length, cost, bandwidth, east of installation, and susceptibility to EMI/RFI.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
