Computer literacy The knowledge and understanding of basic computer fundamentals

Software The programs or instructions used to tell the computer hardware what to do. System software:programs that allow the computer to operate. Application hardware:programs designed to allow uses to perform specific tasks.
Bit The smallest unit of data a digital computer can recognize; 0 or 1
Byte A group of 8 bits.
Kilobyte 1,024 bytes (often rounded to 1,000)
Megabyte 1 million bytes
Gigabyte 1 billion bytes
Terabyte 1 trillion bytes
Petabyte 1000 terabytes
ASCII American Standard Code for Information Interchange; a fixed length binary coding system to represent text-based date for computer processing.
Unicode Universal international coding standard used to represent text-based data in different languages.
System unit The main box of the computer that houses the CPU, motherboard, memory and other devices.
Motherboard The main circuit board of a computer, located inside the system unit, to which all computer system components connect.
RAM Random access memory, located inside the system memory. Volatile, content is lost if computer is shut down without saving.
ROM Read-only memory, non-volatile chips that permanently store data or programs.
Storage device A piece of hardware, such as a DVD drive, into which a storage medium is inserted to be read from.
Storage medium The part of a storage system where data is stored, such as a DVD or flash drive.
CPU Central processing unit, the chip located inside the system unit of a computer that performs the processing for a computer.
Input devices Keyboard, microphones, mouse, pointing devices.
Output devices Speakers, printers, monitors, headsets
