Video Editing Terms
A list of common terms to become familiar with while video editing
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Jump cut | An abrupt edit between two shots that jumps forward in time |
| Cut | An edit between two clips |
| Dissolve | A transition between two clips where one overlaps into the other gradually |
| L Cut | An edit between two clips that has the audio from the first clip extend into the video of the next clip |
| J Cut | An edit between two clips that has the video from the first clip extend into the audio of the next clip |
| In Point | When selecting a clip, this point defines where it will begin |
| Out Point | When selecting a clip, this point defines where it will end |
| Keyframe | Points that can be added to video and/or audio clips that define the beginning or end of an action. |
| Timeline | Where video and audio clips are added and arranged in your editing software to create your video |
| Non-linear Editing | The process of editing that does not follow a straightforward timeline and items can be placed in any order the editor prefers |
| Montage | A sequence of shots put together in succession to form or present an idea, often accompanied by an underlying music track |
| Establishing Shot | The first shot of a scene that shows the viewer the full view of where the subsequent shots will be taking place |
| Importing | The process of bringing external materials such as videos, audio and images into your editing software project |
| Exporting | Sending the sequence you have created on your timeline outside of your editing software |
| Sequence | The assembly of your video and audio tracks on the timeline |
