Unit 3 Body Movemen
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Flexion | bending movement that decreases the angle of the joint |
| Extension | reverse of flexion; joint angle is increased |
| Hyperflexion | occurs when a joint is flexed beyond its normal range of motion |
| Hyper-extension | excessive joint movement in which the angle formed by the bones of a particular joint is straightened beyond its normal, healthy range of motion. |
| Abduction | movement away from the midline |
| Adduction | movement toward the midline |
| Hyperadduction | squeezed together (vocal cords) |
| Hyperabduction | extreme muscular withdrawal of a limb outward from the body. |
| Inversion | Lift medial edge of foot |
| Eversion | Lift lateral edge of foot |
| Dorsiflexion | up and down movement of the foot |
| Plantar Flexion | the movement of the foot in a downward motion away from the body |
| Elevation | raising the scapula (shrug) |
| Depression | lowering the scapula |
| Protraction | move scapulae apart |
| Retraction | move scapulae together |
| Supination | turn palms frontward |
| Pronation | turn palms backward |
| Radial Flexion | a movement that brings the thumb closer to the radial bone of the forearm |
| Ulnar Flexion | flexes and adducts the hand at the wrist |
