diction word choice/words the author has chosen to tell his/her story
imagery authors use of vivid sensory language to create a mental picture of whats described
irony difference between appearance and reality or when you think something will happen but the opposite happens
foreshadowing hits to help predict what will happen
suspense quality that keeps readers interested in the story
symbol something that represents something else
motif object or idea that repeats itself throughout a literary work and contributes toward the development of a theme
theme lesson author wants readers to learn
plot events that make up a story or main part of a story
exposition introduction to the story
conflict primary problem that drives the plot of the story often main goal for the protagonist to achieve
internal conflict character must make a difficult decision
external conflict problem created by outside force
rising action events that lead up to the climax
climax most exciting point of the story a turning point for plot main character goals.
