What were the religious people called during the Salem Witch Trials? Puritans.
The Puritans were deeply... Religious. -Their faith dictated their daily actions. -They wanted to make their religious practices common to the whole nations.
Who was Anne Bradstreet? Known as the first American poet. -Poetry showcased some of her disagreements with some Puritan beliefs: that women must serve their husbands and that people should only focus on the afterlife and not enjoy earthly pleasures.
What is the belief of predestination? Belief that God has already chosen his people. -Had very rigid rules and would judge others.
What did the Puritans wear? Very plain clothing, no colors or flash.
True or false: the Puritans were very hard workers. True.
Give an early description of Cotton Mather. 1663-1708. -Born to a minister and the president of Harvard -Went to Harvard at 12 and graduated at 18 -Went into the clergy after overcoming a terrible speech impediment.
What was Cotton Mather's most popular book about? Published a book detailing the possession of the children of the Goodwin family- took in their 13 y.o. old daughter to conduct further studies.
What was the second most popular Cotton Matther book? Published another book encouraging humanitarian acts. -Encourages schoolmasters to reward instead of punish students -He established societies for community projects.
Cotton Mather claimed that New England was.... A battle ground against Satan (might have influenced the accusations in Salem).
What were the issues with Mather's writings about the Salem Witch Trial? They are often seen as contradictory. Some even say he was coerced by the populace of Salem to condone some of the guilty verdicts.
Who was Martha Carrier? 1st person to be accused of witchcraft- 1692. -She was outspoken and was known to argue with neighbors.
Why was Martha Carrier accused? People around her were dying of the Small Pox outbreak (1690), but none of her immediate family died.
What was the evidence against Martha Carrier? -Cursed a man who then got sores and swelling feet. -Young girl saw a dark specter (ghost) and said she heard Martha’s voice. -Her children were brought in and tortured until they confessed.
