What were the goals of the English settlers? 1.) Spread Christianity. 2.) Colonize other nations to benefit from the resources and wealth. 3.) Escape religious prosecution.
-Who had already been colonizing other nations? -Why was colonizing the Americas so important? -Portugal and Spain. -Colonizing the Americas would prevent other European countries (Roman Catholic) from gaining control of the Western Hemisphere.
True or False: Native Americans never offered help to the English settlers. False, some offered help.
How did the Native Americans help the English settlers? They would offer land and space for settlers- but the number of newcomers became overwhelming and European spilled into the Native lands.

How many nations were in the Iroquis? -What general area did this take over? 6, but there were originally 5. -Maine.
What were the 5 nations of Iroquis? -Seneca. -Cayuga. -Mohawk. -Oneida. -Onondaga.
How did most Native American house people? -Why did they keep housing like this? They were the "people of long house". These houses were anywhere between 20ft by 40ft to 20ft by 200ft. -Kept them unified and made it easier to keep warm.
What is Iroquis meant to describe? Creation of the world and the life in it. Also includes what we might consider "God" and "Satan".
What were the two original worlds? Describe them. 1.) The lower world- was in great darkness with the possession of the great monster. 2.) The upper world- inhabitted by humankind.
Describe the creation of the two main characters of Iroquois. A woman, pregnant with twins, laid down and she began to struggle. As she slept, she sunk down to the lower world. The large turtle "endured her weight". The turtle then became an island of earth.
What happened during the first fight between the twins (two main characters)? One infant was evil and wanted to pass through the mother's underarm. The other was good and wanted to go through the natural process. The two fought and once they were born, the mother passed.
What is a general name for the twins? The Good Mind and the Bad Mind.
What did the Good Mind want? What did the Bad Mind want? The Good Mind wanted to create light in the dark world. He was not content with the darkness. -The Bad Mind wanted the world to remain as it was.
How were the sun and moons made? The head of the twins' mother was turned into the sun while her body was made into the moon. Extra- made to regulate the days, nights, seasons, years, etc.
"Whenever the light extended to the dark world, the monsters..." (Does NOT need to be word-for-word) "...were displeased and immediately concealed themselves in the deep places, lest they should be discovered by some human beings."
What did the Good Mind create? Numerous creaks and rivers, numerous species of animals to inhabit the forests, and fishes to inhabit the waters. He then created a man and a woman.
What did the Bad Mind create/do? High moutains, falls of water, great steeps, reptiles that would be injurious to humankind, but the Good Mind reversed these actions. Then he made humankind into apes.
"The Bad Mind offered a..." -What does this entail? Does NOT need to be word-for-word. "...a challenge to his brother." -Whoever wins could govern the universe.
Who wins? And how? The Good Mind wins by beating the Bad Mind with "deer horns" or antlers.
What happens to the loser of the challenge? The Bad Mind sinks into the earth, where he states he would "have equal power over the souls of humankind after death". He then becomes the evil spirit.
