Video Terms
Terms and definitions describing video projects
Term | Definition | Use Case |
---|---|---|
B-roll | Footage that isn't the main action. It is secondary, filler footage used to provide context and support the main video footage, can be filmed but often stock video. Includes establishing scenes (city, landscape, people in a coffee shop, water flowing). | Used in video editing. B roll may be found/researched before editing begins. |
Video recording kit | Kit sent to remote speakers - mic, ring light, webcam, return label | Used when recording video, should be sent to the speaker 1-2 weeks ahead of scheduled recording. Includes a return label for speaker to send back after use. |
Audio track | Any sound file in a video - typically music, voice over, or sound effects (MP3) | Used in video editing |
Storyboard | Visual plan for a video, showing scene breakdowns and transitions mapped to the script, as well as camera direction or additional information to help define the visuals. This will look/feel different between speaker videos, 3D and 2D animations. | Made from outline, created and edited by internal + client before recording/video creation starts. Questions and important content/decisions are worked out here to avoid complicated edits once the video work has begun. Uploaded to Veeva/submitted to MRC |
Frame/frame rate | A still moment in a video. Frame rate is the frames per second of a video (usually 24fps) | This is important when giving feedback- you want to add your comment to the frame(s)/time in the video where it happens. Frame.io allows you to do this. |
Render | To render is to save a video or animation from editing software into a viewable format (typically MP4) This often includes complex xomputations from the computer to create the final real-time video. | When the video is ready for review, it needs to be rendered first and uploaded for sharing. Final Render is at the end of the project, to be sent to client. An important distinction is that for different videos, render time may vary widely. |
Frame.io | Video renders are uploaded to frame.io, which allows for commenting with time stamps. This is how routing/editing take place. | Used for review and version control throughout video editing. |
Motion graphics | Animated text or 2D graphics in a video or animation | Design & video editing. These add to the cost of a video and are important to discuss with the client up front, including look and feel, number of graphics, etc. |
Title sequence | The set of graphics and text that are animated on screen with the title to introduce a video | Design & video editing. For all creative elements, have conversations early with the client to determine look and feel and be sure it aligns with what was budgeted. |
Lower thirds | The set of graphics and text that are animated on screen with the speaker's title/credentials, usually on the bottom left of the screen | Design & video editing. For all creative elements, have conversations early with the client to determine look and feel and be sure it aligns with what was budgeted. |
3D animation | A process in which images are developed in a software that digitally simulates a real-world 3D (X,Y,Z axis) environment. | Time and resource intensive, long renders, edits and the overall working files are often large and complicated. |
After Effects | Video editing software (that does NOT display to the user in real-time) with a focus on 2D effects and animations | |
Premier Pro | Video editing software (that DOES display to the user in real-time) with a focus on taking original filmed footage and splicing it into a cohesive story | |
MP4 | The most commonly used file type for a rendered compressed video, stores video and audio information | This is the typical deliverable for a video project. It's typically horizontal. If other formats/layouts are needed, try to determine early in the process and notify DCS (ex social media). |
Transition | Anything that takes you from one scene to another - could be animated, could be a cut, could utilize graphics | Design & video editing |
Closed captions | Text on screen corresponding to video script and a direct written translation of the voice over audio | This is a great tool for accessibility, and it should be considered early and worked into the budget. |
Transcription | Video audio is tranlated to a written script word-for-word | Raw footage can be sent for transcription prior to editing. Transcript can be used to identify best takes |
Script | The written text of the audio/closed caption of a video | Typically written before the video is recorded or created/animated. |
Phonetic script | A script that is written based on how words sound as spoken rather than how they are spelled | Typically written before the video is recorded or created/animated |
Rough cut | When footage is cut/spliced together after a video shoot, to approve content. This is before any editing is done. | After filming, prior to more in-depth editing. |
Animatic | Similar to a rough cut, but for 3D animation - this will have basic characters, and is used to map out timing and movement before complicated animation/effects and final characters are done | Done as a step after storyboard, before full animation. |
Voice over | When a voice actor records the script in their voice and sends an audio file | Used to create the video - determines video timing |
Raw footage | The initial video (usually uncompressed) of a fillming without any cuts or effects applied |
