Internet Searching

TermDefinition
Search Engine A website that has a list of websites based on keywords.
Web Crawlers A computer program, or a bot, that goes through all of the information on the internet and creates categories of websites based on keywords.
Page Rank Search Engines put webpages in an order based on popularity.
Keywords These are words related to your topic. Consider including synonyms and even different forms or spellings of the words. The more specific these are the quicker you will find information about your topic.
Essential Question This guides your research and multiple answers.
Boolean Operators Search strategies using the words "and", "or" and "not" to find more specific search results. They have to be typed in all capital letters!
Boolean Operator - NOT Filters out specific words that you do not want in your search results.
Truncation Using the star/asterisk symbol in an internet search to find different forms of the same word. The symbol goes at the end of the root word.
Quotation Marks Using these in an internet search will group words together.
Boolean Operators - AND A search strategy that retrieves information related to two concepts together.
Boolean Operators - OR A search strategy that retrieves search results with one keyword or another, but not both, and still provides similar information
Reliable Websites - Purpose When you are using a website, think about "Why was this website created?"
Reliable Websites - Content When you are using a website, think about "Does this website cover my topic with a lot of details? Do I understand the information?"
Reliable Websites - Credibility When you are using a website, think about "Who is responsible for this information? Are the sources cited? What is the domain name?"
Reliable Websites - Design When you are using a website, think about "Is the site user friendly? Are there any spelling or grammar errors? Can I easily find the information I am looking for?"
Domain Name This is like an address - it is a location on the internet. It is an easy to remember name for the numerical IP address.
