Study Set 2
A&P: Nervous System
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is an action potential? | nerve impulses that fall or rise in voltage across a cellular membrane |
Define membrane potential | it is described as the difference in electrical potential that occurs between the inside and outside of a cell |
Define Spatial summation | Occurs when potentials from different presynaptic neurons causes the post-synaptic neurons to reach its threshold |
Define temporal summation | Occurs when a synapse is stimulated a second time before the effect of the first stimulus has ended |
What are the four main chemical classes of neurotransmitter? | Amino acids, monoamines, peptides, and purines |
What is saltatory conduction? | A type of conduction in which the nerve impulses occurs within the myelinated fibers, where an impulse skips from one node to the next |
What is a neurotransmitter? | known as chemical messengers that sends messages from one neuron to the next target cell |
What are examples of amino acids? | glutamate, glycine, GABA, aspartate |
What are examples of monoamines? | dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin |
What are examples of peptides? | Melanocyte-stimulating hormone, adrenocorticotropin, somatostatin, opioids |
What are examples of purines? | adenosine triphosphate (ATP), ADP, AMP |
