| Term | Definition |

| Homeostasis | Stability, balance, or equilibrium within a cell or the body. It is an organism's ability to keep a constant internal environment. |

| Afferent | Means that a signal is traveling toward a particular center or point of reference. |
| Efferent | Means that the signal is moving away from a center or other oint of reference. |
| Epidermis | Outermost toughest layer, primary function is to protect the internal invironment. |
| Dermis | Sometimes called-true skin- thicker than epidermis, nourishes the cells of lower epidermis, contains capillaries, blood vessels and fibroblast cells. |
| Hypodermis(subcutaneous) layer | Below dermis and made of fatty tissue acts as a cushion to protect the bones. |
| Ephiphysis | The end of the long bone that articulates with another bone. |
| Diaphysis | The shaft of the bone, which is located between the epiphyses. |
| Compact bone | A dense mineralized matrix generated by osteoblasts. |
