Review of Word Terms

toolbar A row of icons on a computer screen that activate commands or functions when clicked.
New new/blank document
Open open a document you already have
Save save a document
Print print the entire document
Print Preview see how the document will look before printing – good to do
Spell Check checks for errors, but not perfect
Research searches reference books and web sites for definitions, translations, etc.
Cut like deleting, except it is kept in the computer’s memory to be pasted later
Copy makes a copy of highlighted section
Paste to put into the document what was cut or copied
Undo undo last thing you did or choose the black arrow to pick a recent action to undo
Redo re-does what you just undid
Insert Hyperlink adds in a link to a web site
Menu Bar contains titles of pull down menus
Formatting toolbar contains icons to format text and layout
Status Bar reports details on the document- number of pages, column, etc.
AutoShapes choose from pre-chosen shapes and adjust size
Shapes rectangle and circle are on main drawing toolbar
WordArt choose a design and make larger wording in different layouts
Margins spacing on the top, bottom, left, and right of document
Landscape horizontal layout
Portrait vertical layout
Word Count counts number of words on page or in highlighted section
Page Numbers Insert, then add page numbers
Size how big the text is, normally size 12
Style Bold, Italic, Underlined, Shadow
Font Type Times New Roman, Arial, etc. the design of the font
Serif With tails – Times New Roam
Sans Serif Without tails – Arial
Alignment Placement of text/graphics on the page
Header text, such as a title, date, or page number, positioned in the top margin of a page and repeated throughout a document
Footer text, such as a title, date, or page number, positioned in the bottom margin of a page and repeated throughout a document.
Bullet a dot or symbol that marks an important line of information or designates items in a list
Bulletted list Use when order of info doesn’t matter
Numbered List Used when the order of the information matters
Borders can be page or paragraph; under Format
Shading can be page or paragraph; under Format
symbols Used to add personal touch or accent to a document
Characters different symbols
CTRL + L Left
CTRL + E Centered
CTRL + R Right
