Term | Definition |

drug | a chemical substance that is taken to cause changes in a persons body or behavior. |
depressant | Slows down mental & physical activity by inhibiting transmission of nerve impulses in the central nervous system causing confusion, decreased alertness, poor coordination, blurred vision, and drowsiness. |
Intoxication | a state in which a persons mental and physical abilities are impaired by alcohol or another substance. Many negative effects on a drinkers body and behavior accompany intoxication by alcohol. |
blackout | a period of time that the drinker cannot recall |
blood alcohol concentration (BAC) | the amount of alcohol in a persons blood, expressed as a percentage. |
Hangover | after-effects of drinking to much alcohol |
Driving while intoxicated (DWI) | having a BAC of more then .08 |
Overdose | taking an excessive amount of a drug that leads to a coma or death. |
binge drinking | consumption of excessive amounts of alcohol at one sitting |
Long-Term risks of Alcohol | Damage to the Body-Brain damage, liver damage, heart disease, digestive problems |
Tolerance | effects of the brain become reduced. Causes a drinkers body to need increasingly larger amounts of alcohol to achieve the original effect. |
Alcoholism | people who can no longer control there use of alcohol suffer from this disease |
Dependence | brain develops a chemical need for alcohol and cannot function normally without it. |
Addiction | no longer has control over something and becomes dependent. |
withdrawal | a group of systems that occur when a dependent person stops taking a drug |
