Computer Hardware
Review of common computer hardware and peripherals.
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Monitor | External computer screen; usually powered separately. |
Mouse | External tool used to control the cursor. |
QWERTY | Standard keyboard layout. |
Right-click | Open more options for the item the cursor is on. |
Left-click | Select the item the cursor is on. |
USB | Most common type of connector and port for peripheral devices like keyboards, printers, and flash drives. |
Trackpad | Built in tool used for controlling the cursor; typically found on laptops. |
Lid | Top of a laptop covering the screen. |
RAM | Short term memory for a computer. More RAM lets a computer handle more activities at once. |
Hard drive | Long term storage for a computer. Can be a HDD (disc) or SSD (flash). |
CPU | The "central processing unit" acts as the control center for the computer; this runs the operating system and apps. |
App | Short for "application"; a computer program. |
Tower | The main body of a desktop computer. |
Launcher | The button that opens the computer's main menu for all available applications and files; i.e. the Microsoft "Start" button. |
Ehternet | A wired internet connection; fiber optic cable. |
Wifi | Wireless internet connection. |
Router | Device that sends and receives wifi signal broadcasts. |
Video card | A processor just for outputting video images. |
