AC/Aircraft A vehicle capable of flight. 'Aircraft' is both plural and singular
A/C L Aircraft Left Left side of the AC, standing in the cabin looking forward toward the flight deck. The Captain or Pilot in Command always sits on the left side
A/C R Aircraft Right Right side of the AC, standing in the cabin lookinng forward toward the flight deck. The First Officer always sits on the right side
AC Number An identification number painted on the outside of the aircraft
Altitude Distance in feet above the ground at sea level
ATA Actual time of arrival
ATC Air Traffic Control
APU/Auxiliary Power Unit A built in power source that provides power to the aircraft
Base Supervisor/Manager Responsible for overall supervision of the flight attendant group for a particular domicile
Bidding Process that awards FA schedules
Block Time When the AC moves from the ramp blocks for the purpose of flight and ends when the AC comes to a stop at the ramp of the termination of flight
Bulkhead A divider or wall in between sections of the AC
Cabin The interior of the AC where the passengers are seated
Cabin Altitude The altitude maintained inside the cabin via pressurization
CA/CAPT/PIC/Captain Pilot in Command who sits in the left seat of the flight deck
CBA Collective Bargaining Agreement
Charter Flight A flight that is not part of an airline published schedule. A company or group may lease an AC for personal use
Check in time The time the flight attendant is required to report for duty
Check Ride A flight where the crewmembers are being audited for duty performance
CIDS Cabin Intercommunication Data System
Configuration Basic layout and seating arrangements of an AC
CPR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
Crew Rest The period from actual check-out to scheduled check-out
Crew Services Department responsible for assigning and keeping track of all flight crew
Critical phase of flight All ground operations involving taxi, takeoff, landing and all other flight operations conduted below 10,000 feet
CRM Crew resosurce management
Crosscheck Verify that the doors in your area of responsibility are armed or disarmed
CSA Customer service agent
Deadhead Transportation of a crewmember from one location to another in order to cover a trip or return home to base
Decompression/Depressurization An involuntary loss if cabin pressure
Deice Procedure that removes frost, ice, slush or snow from AC
Demo The FAA mandated demonstration of AC equiptment and emergrency procedures. The demo must be performed before takeoff for all passengers
DOT/Department of Transportation Agency that governs the transportation industry
Deplane Customers leaving the AC should not be referred to as 'deboarding'

Direct Flight A single flight number that makes one or more stops before reaching its final destination
Dispatch Department within the OCC responsible for dispatching flights, determining the suitabilty of operational facilities and the safe operations of each flight

Door arming Process that is completed prior to any tupe of AC movement positions the side for emergency use
Door disarming Process completed after AC is parked at the gate. Detaches/Repositons the slide to the original normal non-emergency state

Flight deck/Cockpit The forward area of the AC where the CA and FO sit during flight. This area contains the controls and navigation equipment needed to fly the AC
Floor level exit An exit situated at the AC floor level which does not require an individual to step up and through to exit

FWD/Forward At, near or toward the front of the AC
Fuselage Airport body. the complete central structure of an aircraft to which wings, tail, surfaces and engines
Galley Designated area where beverages and meals are prepared
Gate Area where passengers congregate before boarding the AC
Girt Bar A metal bar attached to the escape slide used to arm/disarm the slide from the AC
GMT Greenwich mean time
GSC Ground security coordinator
HAL Halon fire extinguisher
Halfweight Child 2-12 weighing less than 80 pounds
Hangar An enclosed structure especially used to housing or repairing AC
Headwind Wind that blows in the opposite direction of travel
Holding A flight that is waiting on the ground or in the air
ICK Infection control kit
Inboard Jumpseat position that is closest to the aisle
Inbound The AC, flight crew or anyone else arriving at a station
INOP Inoperative
Intermediate stop Scheduled stops between the origination of a flight and the termination at the destination

Jetbridge Enclosed tunnel/pathway between the AC and the terminal gate area that is power driven and controlled by the gate agent
Jumpseat rider Any person other than a working crewmember who is qualified and authorized to sit in the JS

Lap Child An unticketed child who has not reached their second bday
LAV AC lavatory or restroom
Layover A point enroute on a flight where the crew spends time on the ground
Leading edge of the wing The forward edge of the wing

Lifevest A personal flotation device used to prevent drowning in a body of water
LOA Leave of absence

No Show A flight attendant who does not check in at the designated location at or before the scheduled show-time for an assignment or does not attend a mandatory meeting or training without prior approval from inflight management

Non Stop Flight that travels from one city to another with no stops in between

OPS/Operations The companty office at the airport responsible for loading and working of a flight
Originating Station The city where a flight begins
Outboard Jumpseat position closest to the fuselage of the AC
Outbound The AC flight crew or anyone leaving a station
OHB/Overhead Bin An enclosed compartment in the AC located above passenger seats where carry-on items can be placed

Per Diem Daily allowance paid to crewmembers for time away from base
PETC Pet in the cabin
PIC Pilot in Command
Placards FAA required infomation signs located throughout the AC
POB Portable oxygen bottle

Preflight The act of checking the serviceability and location of emergency equipment on the AC prior to departure
PSU Passenger Service Unit
PTT Push to Talk
Pushback The procedure where ground equipment moves an AC away from the gate
R1 First door, AC right
R2 Second door, AC right
Ramp Concrete parking area for AC at the terminal
Reserve A scheduled period of time in a flight attendants bid line in which a FA is obligated to remain available to the Company for the purpose of being assigned a trip pairing or any additional duty
RON Remain overnight
Runway Paved area at an airport used for the takeoff and landing of an AC
Secure To fasten, tie down or store any loose items in the cabin to ensure safe postioning
SIDA Security Identification Display Area
SMS Safety Management System
SOP Standard Operating Procedures
Standby A revenue or non-revenue customer waiting to board an AC after those with reservations are boarded
STOW To place items in a safe location for takeoff and landing
Subservice Using another airlines AC to fly passengers
Tailwind Wind that blows the same direction of travel
Tarmac Paved portion of the secured area of an airport other than the ramp area, includes runways, taxis and remote areas
Taxi To operate an AC under its own power on the ground
Termination The station where a flight makes its last stop
Trailing edge of the wing The AFT edge of the wing
Trip Sequence A combination of two or more flights with the same trip number departing from and returning to the FAs domicile

Turbulance A term used to describe irregular movement of the AC by uncommon changes in the atmospheric air currents while in flight
